By golly! I thought I was through posting today! However, as soon as I had finished my previous post, all Hell broke loose on my Facebook timeline. A dear friend, who is a Marine, had posted a message about four of his brothers murders today in Chattanooga, TN. I don't watch the news much anymore, so I was unaware. I found the story, and it broke my heart. Not only is my heart broken for my friend and my former students who have committed to the Marines, my heart breaks for my country so divided in a time when the inside threat of terrorism is more real than ever. We are so busy pointing out who doesn't agree with whom, that we have allowed a propaganda machine run by special interests and war profiteers to fill our heads with polarizing language. We don't forgive each other. We highlight our differences. We hate those who don't think like us. Our heroes are athletes and celebrities. Our soldiers and peace officers are ridiculed and die ignoble deaths unloaded by those whose gratitude they should have earned. I've included the post I just made on Facebook. Please, if you aren't listening to my rambles about archetypes and symbolism, read this and absorb it. We can't be divided anymore...
Posted by Dakota Meyer: First and foremost my thoughts and prayers go out to the families those four Marines left behind. This incident IS an act of domestic terrorism, regardless of how Washington spins it, regardless of what nationality, color, creed, or otherwise the shooter was. This was a planned attack on the United Stated Military on United States soil. Now is not the time to come out waiving photos of bullet holes in the glass calling for more gun control and spinning the story to yield a further separation of peoples in the Unites States. Now is the time for a call on the American people to finally realize the state of the world we are living in and the enemy that we face. Now is the time to call on the on the American people to ignore the propaganda that special interest groups have been shoving in our faces and unite as a country so that we may become our neighbor’s keeper. Evil is not just over seas, but also here at home. Moments after this tragedy had occurred ISIS sent out via Twitter that they were responsible for the attacks and that the shooter, Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez was one of theirs. ISIS said recently that they were coming to American soil to kill members of the United States Military and now that threat has come to fruition. ~~~~ Listen up, people! This part is worth repeating 10 times over: Now is the time to call on the on the American people to ignore the propaganda that special interest groups have been shoving in our faces and unite as a country so that we may become our neighbor’s keeper.
There was a time when this country had people who weren't at each others' throats for saying the wrong word. It wasn't that long ago. It was the 21st century, and we banded together when terrorists killed over 3000 people in New York City, and a plane full of heroes died in a field in Pennsylvania, preventing another attack. What has happened to us? Why must we be divided when Americans aren't the ones who threaten us? There was a time when we didn't hate each other because we didn't agree on viewpoints. We need that again. We need to stop listening to the propaganda machine and start THINKING. Even more, we need to come together in action, exercising our rights in a defensive and peaceful way - looking our for our neighbors who are less fortunate.
RIP Marines.
